By the 1870s, this area was a popular destination for the people of Grand Rapids and the surrounding areas to come and spend the day swimming, boating, and picnicking. These activities gave rise to the most remarkable historical feature, Ramona Park, an amusement park owned and operated by the Grand Rapids Street Railway Company. This destination operated between 1897 and 1955. Former President Gerald R. Ford even worked at a concession stand there.
In the early 1950s, as the community looked toward progress, efforts were made to close the park and reimagine the area as a modern commercial and residential hub. Today, where the Jack Rabbit Derby Racer wooden rollercoaster once thrilled visitors, a dynamic streetscape thrives—home to celebrated establishments such as Bowdies Chophouse, Carolina Lowcountry, Athleta, and LoveSac. Above the storefronts, a blend of office, medical, and executive suites contributes to the district’s vibrant professional life.
